Unbranded GARCINIA INTERMEDIA (AKA LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN/MON

Brand: Unbranded
PLEASE NOTE THAT I PREFER NOT TO SHIP TO HAWAII, PUERTO RICO OR INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE RISK OF THE PLANT NOT SURVIVING THE JOURNEY. IF YOU WISH TO COVER THE COST OF EXPEDITED SHIPPING YOU CAN MESSAGE ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR PURCHASING A SEEDLING SO THAT  WE CAN DISCUSS OPTIONS BUT I CAN NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR LOSSES DUE TO USPS OR OTHER SHIPPING CARRIER SERVICES THAT DO NOT DELIVER ON TIME RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF YOUR SEEDLING(S)

I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This evergreen perennial tolerates mild temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 40 F. For this reason you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mail box and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged.

I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2 to 3 day delivery or Fed Ex Home delivery/GROUND/SMART POST with tracking that is available upon request but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Please try to understand, this is something that is out of my control.

If your plant arrives damaged beyond saving, please message me with pictures of both your package and plant (STILL SECURED TO THE BOX) immediately so that I may correct the problem as soon as possible. There is no need to leave negative feedback as I always try to answer questions or concerns on a very timely basis, sometimes within minutes of being messaged. Your satisfaction is my greatest concern and I will do everything possible to make things right. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY GARDENING :)

LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN IS BELIEVED TO ORIGINATE ON BOTH THE ATLANTIC AS WELL AS THE PACIFIC SIDE OF CENTRAL AMERICA.  IT IS ALSO KNOWN AS MONKEY FRUIT, BUT GOES BY MANY NAMES DEPENDING ON IT'S COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. IN GUATEMALA, PALO DE FRUTILLA, WAIKI PLUM (BELIZE), CHAPARRON (EL SALVADOR) CAIMITO OR CAIMITO DE MONTANA (HONDURAS), JORCO (COSTA RICA), SASTRA (PANAMA), BERBA (PHILIPNES).  IN PORTUGAL, IT HAS THE NAME ACHACHAIRO WHICH IS SOMEWHAT OF A CONFUSION BECAUSE THIS NAME IS ALSO GIVEN TO ANOTHER VARIETY OF GARCINIA (GARCINIA HUMILIS) WHICH GROWS IN BOLIVIA. THAT FRUIT IS SOMEWHAT LARGER AND MORE ROUNDED OR EGG-SHAPED. G HUMILIS HAS BEEN COMMERCIALIZED IN AUSTRALIA WHERE IT IS KNOWN AS ACHACHA.
LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN IS A FAST GROWING, EVERGREEN PLANT THAT CAN GROW AS A TREE OR BUSH IN TERMS OF IT'S GROWTH HABIT. THE LEAVES ARE DARK GREEN, ORNAMENTAL AND THE TREE ITSELF CAN BE CONTAINER GROWN ON A PATIO OR SOMEWHERE SUNNY BUT PROTECTED FROM COLD TEMPERATURES. FRUITING IS EASILY ACHIEVED IN A CONTAINER GROWN SETTING. THE TRUNK GROWS STRAIGHT, DARK BROWN AND RELEASES A YELLOW SAP. THE FRUIT IS ROUND, ABOUT 1 INCH IN DIAMETER WITH A LARGE SEED SURROUNDED BY A SOFT WHITE PULP. FRUIT IS YELLOW TO ORANGE/RED WITH A TART TO SWEET TASTE. , VERY FLAVORFUL AND CAN BE MADE INTO A BEVERAGE, JAMS OR MARMALADE WHICH IS QUITE COMMON IN CENTRAL AMERICA. THE PLANT IS GENERALLY PROPAGATED VIA SEEDLINGS AND ALTHOUGH CONSIDERED SELF FERTILE, TREES CAN BE MALE, FEMALE OR A SELF-POLLINATING HERMAPHRODITE, FOR THIS REASON, IT IS BEST TO HAVE 2 OR MORE TREES TO ENSURE A BETTER CROP.
SOIL: LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN PREFERS DEEP POROUS SOIL THAT IS RICH IN HUMUS WITH GOOD DRAINAGE. IT WILL ALSO THRIVE IN SOIL THAT IS RICH IN ORGANIC NUTRIENTS ESPECIALLY CLAY OR SANDY LOAM THAT CONTAINS COURSE MATERIAL. LEMON MANGOSTEEN HAS BEEN FOUND GROWING ON COASTAL AREAS AND SOIL CAN VARY FROM DEEP SANDS TO HEAVY SOILS COMPOSED OF BOTH EARTH AND SAND ON AREAS THAT WERE ONCE FLOODED. DOES BEST IN SLIGHTLY ACIDIC TO NEUTRAL SOIL, BUT IS QUITE TOLERANT OF A WIDE RANGE OF SOIL TYPES. IN, FLORIDA SOIL IS VERY ALKALINE, YET LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN GROWS WITH GOOD VIGOR. IF CONTAINER GROWN, ANY GOOD QUALITY WELL DRAINING SOIL WITH A SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZER WILL DO WELL.
WATER: LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN IS DEFINITELY NOT DROUGHT TOLERANT AND WILL DO BEST WITH REGULAR RAINFALL/WATERING. EVEN AFTER YOUR TREE/BUSH IS WELL ESTABLISHED, IRRIGATION SHOULD DEFINITELY BE DONE DURING DRY MONTHS.
SUNLIGHT: FULL SUN IS BEST ONCE TREE/BUSH IS MATURE. LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN IS TOLERANT OF PARTLY SHADED CONDITIONS WHEN OLDER BUT FRUIT PRODUCTION WILL DECREASE MARKEDLY.

CLIMATE: HARDINESS IN USDA ZONE 9B TO 13. COLD TOLERANT TO 30F FOR SHORT PERIODS. TROPICAL TO SUBTROPICAL REGIONS WITH A HUMID CLIMATE, AND NON-WINDY DRY CONDITIONS. LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN WILL DO BEST IN AREAS THAT RECEIVE AN ANNUAL RAINFALL OF 40 TO 50 INCHES. THE BEST TIME TO PLANT YOUR LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN IS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RAINY SEASON.

FERTILIZER: NOT MUCH INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE. IN THE WILD, LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN GROWS WELL IN HUMUS RICH LANDSCAPES THAT HAVE A RAINFOREST TYPE GROUND COVER. FERTILIZATION WILL IMPROVE GROWTH RATE. USE OF A  HIGH QUALITY, SLOW TIMED RELEASE FERTILIZER THAT IS SPARINGLY APPLIED ABOUT 10 INCHES FROM THE BASE OF YOUR PLANT 3 TIMES PER YEAR WILL IMPROVE FRUIT PRODUCTION.

HARVESTING: LEMON DROP MANGOSTEEN TAKES FROM 3 TO 6 MONTHS TO MATURE.  FRUIT IS READY FOR HARVESTING WHEN FRUIT IS SLIGHTLY SOFT WHEN GENTLY SQUEEZED AND WHEN THE FRUIT REACHES A FULL YELLOW/ORANGE COLOR. THE FRUIT IS SURROUNDED BY A RATHER FIRM INEDIBLE RIND THAT CAN TOLERATE FALLS FROM THE TREE WITH MINIMAL DAMAGE TO THE FRUIT.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:  PRIOR TO TRANSPLANTING YOUR SEEDLING, WATER THE TOP OF YOUR SEEDLING WELL, THEN PLACE THE NURSERY POT IN A CONTAINER WITH ABOUT 2 INCHES OF WATER FOR ABOUT 2-3 HOURS SO THAT YOU CAN SATURATE THE SOIL SURROUNDING THE ROOT BALL WITH MOISTURE WHICH HELPS TO HOLD THE ROOTS SECURE. THIS PREVENTS THE ROOT BALL FROM FALLING APART DURING TRANSPLANTATION.
WHEN YOU ARE READY TO TRANSPLANT YOUR MANGOSTEEN SEEDLING TO EITHER A LARGER PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER (OR TO YOUR GARDEN LOCATION OF CHOICE WHEN YOUR SEEDLING IS TALLER AND MORE MATURE) DO SO BY CAREFULLY REMOVING YOUR PLANT FROM THE 1 GALLON NURSERY POT WITHOUT DISTURBING THE ROOT BALL. THIS CAN BE DONE BY INVERTING THE POT WHILE CAREFULLY SUPPORTING THE TOPSOIL SURROUNDING THE STEM OF YOUR PLANT SO THAT THE ENTIRE PLANTS AND SOIL ROOTBALL REMAINS INTACT. GENTLY SLIDE THE PLASTIC NURSERY POT AWAY FROM THE ROOT BALL. HAVING A SECOND PERSON TO ASSIST YOU IS A GOOD IDEA IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE THIS BEFORE.
THE OTHER METHOD TO REMOVE THE PLANT FROM IT'S CONTAINER IS TO USE A LARGE SHARP PAIR OF SCISSORS OR A BOX CUTTER TO GENTLY CUT AWAY THE BASE AND SIDES OF THE NURSERY POT TO CAREFULLY RELEASE THE ROOT BALL OF YOUR SEEDLING FROM THE POT. CAREFULLY REMOVE YOUR PLANT ROOTBALL FROM IT'S CONTAINER WITHOUT DISTURBING THE ROOT BALL. HAVE THE NEW HOME SOIL PREPARED TO RECEIVE YOUR PLANT. IF YOU PREFER TO TRANSPLANT TO A LARGER PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER, USE ANY GOOD QUALITY WELL DRAINING POTTING SOIL TO PROMOTE GROWTH.  BE CAREFUL TO KEEP THE ROOT BALL INTACT DURING TRANSPLANT TO PREVENT TRANSPLANT SHOCK.

Seller Notes

“You will receive the 9" seedling seen in the pics, shipped in a 1 gal. nursery pot in soil-less medium. My seedlings are organically grown =NO pesticides. Plants are grown from seeds, slow growing reaching up to 15 feet in ideal conditions. Excellent as an evergreen landscape tree that can produce many tart to sweet, yellow colored, juicy, edible plum like fruits with a very tender edible skin. Growth rate is relatively slow, with fruit production in about 5 yrs when grown from seed. Lemon Drop is mostly disease resistant . I recommend growing in a 3 gal pot in part shade, then transplant to full sun at 2-3 feet tall. YOUR PLANT WILL BE SECURELY PACKAGED IN A 1 GAL NURSERY POT TO PRESERVE MOISTURE DURING THE 2-5 DAY SHIPPING. DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE PLANT, IT ISN'T UNUSUAL TO FIND THAT LEAVES MAY APPEAR WILTED OR MAY HAVE FALLEN OFF THE PLANT ON ARRIVAL. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR PLANT DIED. IMBE IS TOUGH AND TOLERATES SHIPPING STRESS. SEE MORE BELOW”Read LessRead more
