- Photochromic glasses are clear when indoors or at night and automatically darken to a sunglasses tint when exposed to UV sunlight (may not change obviously under weak UV lights). Lenses will begin to clear as soon as they are away from UV sunlight, and will be noticeably lighter and mostly clear within a few minutes. They absorb UV radiation that can otherwise damage your eyes. They are an excellent solution for people who hate constantly switching between their reading glasses and their shades.
- A photochromic lens is an optical lens that darkens on exposure to light of sufficiently high frequency, most commonly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the absence of activating light, the lenses return to their clear state. They are principally used in eyeglasses that are dark in bright sunlight, but clear in low ambient light conditions. They darken significantly within about a minute of exposure to bright light and take somewhat longer to clear.
- Transition glasses have lenses that change tint depending on the weather or surroundings. The benefit of transition lenses is that in dull, overcast weather, or darker surroundings (like cycling through the woods or early / late in the day) they will lighten. But in bright, sunny conditions they will turn to tinted sunglasses. Photochromic lenses do a great job of stopping the dazzling effects of sunlight when you are driving, running, fishing, biking, golfing, and all outdoor activities.
