Product Overview
UHMW
& Our History
We were one of the pioneers in poly bonding, in the early days of the internet. Now our patented Bonding Poly Process (Process), makes it possible all kinds of new space age materials; including UHMW's. As with most materials, the same properties which make it ideal for use in its most prevalent industries, often make it harder to bond and impossible to glue. UHMW polymers are self-lubricating, which make it resistant to wear and abrasion. 'Super glues' or epoxies, which essentially work by being sticky, have nothing to grab onto. The extremely slick and abrasion resistant surface, offers challenges most adhesives simply cannot overcome.
Enter the Bonding Poly Process and molecular bonding. Our process bonds materials together on a molecular level. To put it simply, the monomers and polymers of each surface form a covalent bond, regardless of the substrate (with the exception of stainless steel and glass). Enter the established internet era some 16 years later, along with our Bonding Poly Process. Our years of working with the 'impossible' plastics, eventually led us to the three main keys to bonding UHMW's.
The Three Keys to Bonding UHMW
Poly Prep Adhesion Promoter, Heat and a wear resistant, highly durable bonding agent.
The first key to bonding UHMW is to use two coats of our Poly Prep Adhesion Promoter. UHMW has an extremely low absorption rate. It has an absorption rate of less than .01%! Our standard practice is to spray one layer of the Poly Prep, on the plastic surface to be bonded and then let it dry for 30 seconds to 1 minute. For UHMW we recommend two coats of our Poly Prep and letting it dry after each use. This will ensure that enough Poly Prep has been administer, to chemically etch the surface of the slick plastic. Our specially formulated Advanced UHMW Adhesive Molecular Bonding System, provides twice the amount of our Poly Prep adhesion promoter to accommodate for this differential.
The second key to bonding UHMW is heat. Heat is the chemical part of the reaction and essential to the formation of a permanent molecular bond. Heat the UHMW, UHMWPE or HMPE with a hair dryer, heat gun or digital oven to approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat causes the molecules to expand, the bond is formed. As the material cools the molecules constrict, enforcing exponentially, the strength of the existing bond. This small but important step, is essential for forming strong covalent bonds.
The third key to bonding UHMW is to consider the wear resistance and durability of the adhesive. UHMW's wear resistance and high durability, make it ideal for molecular bonding. Bonds do no degrade over time. The glue joins formed by super glue on the other hand, to degrade over time. The stick is not permanent. For such a durable material, this is less than ideal. Molecular bonds however, are not exposed to the elements. They do not degrade over time. Like UHMW, they are resistant to not only water, but oil, gas and other common chemicals as well. With the bonds resistant to age and weathering, in conjunction with their phenomenal sheer and tensile strength, the bonds are very durable. It matches UHMW in these characteristics, the last and final consideration, when bonding UHMW's.
The steps for bonding UHMW to itself or to a poly surface.
- Use sandpaper or steel wool to rough the UHMW or UHMWPE surface.
- Clean the surfaces with a cleaner that will not leave a residue.
- Wipe with a soft cloth.
- Saturate the UHMW and the poly surface with our Poly Prep, an adhesion promoter for polymers and then repeat once.
- Spray one of the poly surfaces with our Activator/Accelerator (AA).
- Warm both the UHMW and poly surfaces with a hair dryer or heat gun. By touch, you want the silicone/poly just to below hot. By temperature, about 120 degrees F.
- Apply an SI Structural Adhesive to the opposite surface from where you sprayed the AA. Make sure that the SI adhesive reaches the edges of the join.
- Very firmly Firmly press the two surfaces together for at least 15 seconds.
- Apply a bead of the SI Structural Adhesive to the seam between the surfaces.
- Spray the seam with the Activator/Accelerator.
As a result of this process, the two UHMW surfaces will be bonded. Operational strength is achieved almost immediately, but the strength of the bond is directly proportional to the amount of time it is given to fully cure.
To bond UHMW to steel; to bond UHMW to aluminum; to bond UHMW to metal
- Rough the surface of UHMW with sandpaper or steel wool.
- Sand the steel, aluminum or metal first with a coarse grade of sand paper.
- Then sand the steel, aluminum or and the metal with a low-grit (400 or 600) coarse sand paper. You want a near white finish or steel or polished surface for aluminum and other metals. It makes a difference.
- Clean all surfaces with a cleaner that will not leave a residue.
- Wipe with a clean soft cloth.
- Saturate the UHMW surface with our Poly Prep, an adhesion promoter for polymers. Repeat once.
- Spray a solvent based Activator/Accelerator (AA) on either the Teflon or metal.
- Warm the UHMW surface with a hair dryer or heat gun. By touch, you want the silicone/poly just to below hot. By temperature, about 120 degrees F.
- Apply an SI Structural Adhesive to the opposite surface from where the AA was sprayed.
- Firmly press the two surfaces together for a minimum of fifteen seconds.
As a result of this process, the UHMW and metal surfaces are bonded. Operational strength is achieved almost immediately, but the strength of the bond is directly proportional to the amount of time it is given to fully cure.
Below is a video to bond Teflon to Delrin. The procedure is virtually identical, except for the extra coat of Poly Prep Adhesion promoter. We will soon have a UHMW video, but for now this will be a good guide, if you would prefer video instructions.
