Samanea saman
Widely cultivated as an ornamental, it is often used in bonsai culture as well as the greenhouse. The fern like leaves close up on cloudy days to let the rain fall through. Flowers bloom in exotic pink puffs most heavily in late spring through summer. Perfect as a bonsai specimen as well as a standard or container plant.
Fun Facts:
1. An evergreen tree with leaves up at night
2. Grows to 180 feet in its native habitat
3. Makes an excellent container plant
4. The wood is extremely attractive and is used to make unique platters and bowls
5. The sweet, sticky pods are often fed to cattle in South America
native from the Yucatan Peninsula and Guatemala to Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil
