These Exotic Desert Ironwood pen blanks are meticulously crafted from the wood of the Ironwood tree, also known as "palo fierro" in Spanish. Desert Ironwood, with its stunning grain and dense composition, stands as one of the heaviest woods indigenous to the United States and Mexico, alongside Leadwood from Florida. Thriving in the deserts and coastal regions of Arizona, California, Baja California, and Sonora Mexico, Ironwood trees flourish at altitudes of 2,500 feet above sea level. The specific species utilized is "Olneya tesota," the exclusive species of its genus in the Pacific Southwest. Rather than harvesting live Ironwood trees for carving, fallen Ironwood is carefully collected and dried for several years before being skillfully used by artisans. The art of carving desert Ironwood was introduced by the Seri Indians in 1961 and is still carried out by talented artisans in northern Sonora, Mexico. Each piece is individually hand-carved by skilled artisans, resulting in unique variations in shape, color, and grain, ensuring that every piece is one-of-a-kind. The presence of natural imperfections in the wood further enhances the distinctive character of each piece.
