Autophagy: Mechanism against Garb'Ageing
The term autophagy is derived from the ancient Greek autóphagos, which means something like "consuming itself". What sounds negative at first is necessary for a balance between the production of new and the breakdown of old cell components. This natural breakdown and remodelling of building blocks was only discovered in 2016 by Yoshinori Osumi, a Japanese scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery.
