Black European Elderberry grows to 10-12 ft tall. Planted 4 ft. apart, these short white flowering shrub trees make for an excellent hedgerow. The flowers are edible and can be used to make medicinal tea. This European variety blooms white hermaphrodite flowers in May (earlier than the American species) and fruits follow shortly after. The shrub grows rapidly with suckering. European black elderberry is the most medicinal and edible berry tree of all the Sambucus.
The berries need boiling, then they can be eaten off of the tree.
The Sambucus nigra elder is the one most used in the all-natural cough syrup recipes. It is the choice elderberry variety for health!
Germination Procedure: Soak seeds in a glass of water for 3 days to soften and swell the seeds. Next, wrap the pre-soaked seeds into a damp (but not dripping wet) paper towel and place all of this into a sealed ziploc bag. Next, place the entire bag and it's contents into the refrigerator for 2 months to break the dormancy. After the time has passed the seeds will be ready to germinate in warm 70 degree temperatures. Sow seeds at a 1/4 an inch depth. Germination is spotty. Most seedlings will appear within 1-2 months.
