Tungsten 2.0% Thorium
Lanthane is a very popular material most commonly used as a substitute for thorium. The content of 1.5% (compared to 2% thorium) was selected by two of the largest manufacturers as the optimal amount, based on scientific studies that showed that it reflects the conductivity properties of 2% tungsten as accurately as possible. Thorium Therefore, welders were generally able to replace the radioactive material of 2% thorium with this tungsten and did not have to make any changes to the welding processes.
In addition, a major manufacturer conducted an independent study on this material at the AWS fair in Detroit, Michigan in 1998. This study concluded that the electrodes with 2% thorium, 2% cerium, and 1.5% lanthane by observing the erosion of the limbs after 300 launches of C.C. at 70 and 150 amps. In both cases, 1.5% tungsten lanthan showed the slightest peak erosion. This decrease in erosion is due to the fact that lanthane is less dense than thorium, so an electrode containing 1.5% lanthane contains 15% more oxide than one with 2% thorium. This supports arc ignition and stability as well as the longevity of the tip thanks to the added oxide volume that keeps the tip cool.
This material is also suitable for AC welding. If you want to optimize the welding, this is therefore an excellent electrode.
