* Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction. Folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, magnesium and calcium play a role in cell division. Folic acid contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy. Additional folic acid intake increases the mother's folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the adolescent fetus. Women of childbearing age achieve this positive effect with an additional daily folic acid intake from 400 μg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
