It held up for a bit, but then the but I was using started slipping. It only grips and clamps down on one side, which causes it to spin even when tightened down. I bought this from Home Depot (about $10) and it's far better because it clamps in automatically and is supported by all six sides at once. While I dont care much for the extension above, l would rate the one in the following link 5/5. Spend the extra few bucks to get the better quality tool and avoid the hasslenj went through. 12 in. The pocket barrel is cylindrical, not hexagonal. This causes the bit to spin inside the shaft. There are 2 set screws on the side but neither line up with the depression of a hex shank bit, leaving the retention dependent on compression force from the screw. Even with blue loctite applied to the set screws, they back out easily after a few minutes of use due to vibration.

I got this item to extend a drill bit, so I could drill into a tree stump to apply stump killer. I found some bits worked better than others, so I needed to change them a few times as I went. However after the 3rd change, the top hex nut shredded and had to be drilled out to get my drill bit out. The extension itself also warped and bent during usage. Now I know, drilling into a tree stump is hard work on a 1 1/2" drill bit and this extension. But i only got to use it for maybe 15 holes on one day before it became warped. OK maybe that was too much for it. But finding that the screws that holds your bit in place are a cheap easy to break metal. That's just cost savings where it shouldn't be.

Received yesterday (5/16/12) and immediately put this extension to use. I was under the assumption that the female end of the extension would have a Hex shape. It does not. The female side is round. The female end of the extension uses two set screws to keep bits from spinning or disconnecting. At first I was disappointed as the Daredevil bit spun inside the extension as soon as I started drilling the 1st of many holes. I tightened the set screws to the point where I felt any more torque would risk stripping the hex in the set screw. That solved the slipping problem. The Daredevil spade bits I purchased have a male hex and a groove machined into the hex. This allows one set screw in the extension to hit a flat spot on the bit to prevent it from rotating inside the extension. The other set screw threads into the groove cut in the bit to prevent it from pulling apart. These set screws must be VERY tight! This locking groove was especially helpful yesterday as I was drilling through 2 railroad ties (stacked as landscape borders) and the bit required frequent removal to clear the hole. I was worried that the bit would come apart from the extension (and become forever stuck in the wood) but it never did. I was very impressed that it all held together. If the extension had a Hex shaped female end (instead of round) I'd give this product a solid 5 stars. The round shape makes it slightly more universal but I would prefer the Hex shape for the more positive engagement versus relying on one small set screw which I am confident will eventually be the death of this tool.

This does not work very well. The chuck itself is just some hex nuts that tighten against one side of the bit. You have to make it extremely tight to avoid the bit slipping (unless you have hex shank bits). Even when properly tightened, the bit is not centered. Thus, the bit wobbles around quite a bit when trying to drill a hole. Bosch usually has top notch products. This one falls short. It seems impossible to find a 12 inch (or longer) extension with a legitimate 1/2" chuck.

Another extended drill bit (18") that I bought has a much better interface with the bits I'm trying to attach at the end. So far, I'm trying to use brushes and their bits, and their bits measure 1/4". Hope this makes sense.

There are 2 hex-headed internal screws to hold in the shaft, and the whole thing is very strong and doesn't seem to 'wobble' too much off a straight axis. I didn't measure the thickness of the head but this passed through with a 5/8ths spade bit with no problems, but I think that's about the smallest bit you could comfortably use with this, maybe one size smaller, with a bit of pushing. Considering the low price of the Bosch spade bits, getting one of these will double all of their useful lengths, so it's a good cheap investment. Hopefully, you find this review helpful!

I bought 2 of them and joined them with a small stainless steel mixer from the "Tools & Home Improvement" section here on Amazon. I taped the screws with electrical tape therefore they can be used with the mixer to mix pails of paint, primer and half buckets of tile grout or other non-food low viscous liquids. I also use 2 of them together with the spade bits to drill holes in the attic for example to feed wires down the walls.
