Our Kala Namak is created by hours of boiling rock salt and the fruits of the Haritaki tree, which transfers the taste and colour of this legume to the salt. The deep red testifies to the high iron content of rock salt. A distinctive sulphur smell and the smoky, slightly bitter taste make Kala Namak a spice traditionally used in numerous Ayurvedic dishes. It is widely used in Indian cuisine and an important ingredient for masalas and other foods such as chutneys, raitas and all kinds of fruits. With tofu or avocado, it is often eaten as an egg substitute.
Kala Namak is not harmful to your health. In 2003, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) examined Kala Namak for its relatively high concentration of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that smells of rotten eggs even in low concentration. At that time, the BfR came to the conclusion that the "Kala Namak", "Black Salt" or "Black Salt" does not pose a health hazard when used as intended, such as in Indian cuisine.
