General information about blood pressure:
- Blood pressure is the force with which the blood stream presses against the artery walls. Arterial blood pressure changes constantly over the course of a cardiac cycle.
- The indication of the blood pressure is always in the form of two values:
- The highest pressure in the cycle is called systolic blood pressure. It occurs when the heart muscle contracts and thus the blood is pressed into the vessels.
- The lowest is the diastolic blood pressure, which is applied when the heart muscle has fully expanded again and the heart fills with blood.
- Blood pressure fluctuations are normal. Even with a repeat measurement, there may be considerable differences between the measured values. One-time or irregular measurements therefore do not provide a reliable statement about the actual blood pressure. A reliable assessment is only possible if you measure regularly under comparable conditions.
