To do so, cucumber seeds need to be buried about 1⁄2 inch deep in soil that is well-drained, loose, and nutrient-rich. Cucumbers love heat, so full sun is ideal whether you are germinating your seeds indoors or outdoors. Stage Two: Seedlings Appear During the seeding stage, cucumber plants will develop tiny seed leaves (or cotyledon) before growing sets of true leaves. The seed leaves will form within a day or two after the plants break through the soil. Between 10 and 14 days later, true leaves will form, which will grow with the plant. Once your seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves and are about four inches high, replant them further apart if needed. Stage Three: Leaves and Vines Grow Larger Within a few weeks, your plants will get larger, the leaves will get larger and develop serrated edges, and more vines will form. Vines might also start to spread across their planting spot or climb up a nearby stake or trellis, if you placed one nearby. At this stage, watering near the roots is better than watering from above. Stage Four: Flower Buds Appear Bright-yellow flowers will pop up over the course of two weeks. Male flowers will bloom first, which attract the pollinators needed for female flowers to develop and set fruit later on. Some cucumbers are self-pollinating plants, known as parthenocarpic varieties. Check your seeds to determine what types you have. Use a bit of fertilizer in this stage to keep your plant growing steadily. Cucumbers are heavy feeders and fertilizer will help them increase in size. Stage Five: Tiny Cucumbers Form Tiny cucumber on vine Miro V / 500 px / Getty Images In this exciting stage, the female flowers open and you will see tiny cucumbers at the base of the bloom. The cucumbers are about under two inches, depending on the variety, and are lighter in color with lightly textured skin. Once pollinated, they will grow larger. Be vigilant with watering at this stage. The soil should be moist, but not wet. In hot weather, water once a day, but otherwise every other day should be fine. You can also fertilize regularly (once per week or so) to help the plant yield more fruit. Cucumbers grow quickly at this stage and may be ready for harvest within a few days. Stage Six: Cucumbers Are Ready to Harvest Within eight to 10 days after the tiny fruits first emerge from the blossom, they are ready to harvest. You can tell when to pick your cucumbers by their color and density: they will be a deep luscious shade of green (unless the variety you are growing is not dark green) and will be firm to the touch. Pick the ones that are ready and let the rest ripen and put on some size. Check the information for your specific variety to see how large they're supposed to be at maturity. Harvesting cucumbers regularly encourages new flower buds to form, and then you can have cucumbers throughout the growing season.
