The 102 Series Combo Cable Railing Kit by Ultra-Tec is one of the most versatile and economical cable railing kits on the market today. It features two different cable options and a wide variety of lengths to satisfy the needs of almost any application.
Additionally, it is designed to be able to be used with either metal or wood posts in through-post configurations.
It includes a Pull-Lock fitting on one end of the cable and the tensioning device is a 2 7/8" long threaded stud which installs on the back side of one of the end posts. An OPTIONAL stainless steel cap is is also available for covering the exposed brass locknut and giving the installation a finished look.
With this kit's 100% swageless design specifically made for DIY homeowners, it will completely eliminate the need for expensive professional installation while also making your deck or stairs look great! Swageless fittings are made to easily be installed by hand in the field, requiring only the use of Cable Cutters. By using swageless fittings, the holes that need to be made only need to be as big as the bare cable that passes through. This also eliminates the use installers or expensive machinery because it can all be done by hand in a matter of minutes.
Through-Post Configurations are the only mount type that the 102 Series may be used with. This means that each cable will start at one end post and continue through each intermediate post or cable brace until reaching the other end of its run. This configuration should be used when there are dedicated end posts for each run, and are situated such that the back side of the posts are all accessible. This is both the most economical solution and where the fittings are least visible. This kit should not be used on corner angles larger than 45. If turning 90, a double corner post configuration is required, using post protector tubes where each cable enters/exits the posts at an angle to keep the cable from wearing into the wood.

For wooden posts, a minimum size of 4" x 4" (3" Sq.) is required to keep the post from bending when cables are tensioned. A top rail is also needed and is recommended that it be reinforced with a support such as a 2" x 4" on end under the top rail. End posts must also be securely mounted to the deck in order to prevent the post from coming loose while tensioning cables. Additonally, a bottom rail is recommended to to help distribute the force away from the bottom of the post, however it is not required.

For steel posts, a minimum size of 1 x 1 Sq. and 2x2 square tube is required to keep the post from bending when cables are tensioned. End posts will need to be a minimum 1/4 wall in order to handle the load when the cables are tensioned; intermediates can be 1/8. As with wood posts, you will need a top rail, but that is sufficient for structural integrity. For aluminum, your end posts should be reinforced and you may want to consider a bottom rail to help prevent post-bowing. Intermediate Posts Intermediate posts (or mid-posts) are to be placed every 48" between end posts. An intermediate post runs from the top rail to the lower mounting surface and is integral for proper structural design. Intermediate posts can be substituted with something thinner such as a 2" x 4" wood post, or an aluminum or steel cable brace. Cables are strung through holes in each post in order to provide support between end posts. Each post hole made should not exceed 3" vertical spacing in order to comply with IBC regulations.
