Arrives
- The NEW DirtSaw Deuce (patent pending), redefines what an ultralight backpacking and camping trowel is and how it’s used. The DirtSaw literally saws the ground with teeth that are specifically designed to cut dirt without snagging on roots or threatening to cut your hand. You’ll use it use it upside down (!), sideways, and the “regular way” as you probe, pry, saw and scoop your way to a true Leave-No-Trace 6-8” deep hole.
- You’ll use the Deuce upside down about a third of the time: first use it handle down to probe for rocks or roots would spoil your hole; probing like this is a fantastic time-saver. Use it the same way to saw the outline of the top of the hole and pop out the first 2-3” of your hole in one piece. Deeper, break up hard dirt and pry out rocks. The DirtSaw workflow is one of continually changing your grip as you saw, pry and scoop your way to a true 6” to 8” deep hole.
- Two notches on the front edge protect recessed teeth that you can sharpen (use a nail file) to slice tenacious mountain plant roots. They’re protected so they can stay sharp and they’re far enough away from the front edge that they don’t threaten your hand when using the Deuce upside down. The short handle allows you to push on the shoulders and top of the trowel at the same time – letting you use the DirtSaw deep into your hole, where long-handled tools succumb to ever-narrowing hole syndrome.
- Ray-bends are another new evolution this year. They make the Deuce 65% stronger against bending in the middle and almost 3X stronger at the hole (and the elliptical hole shape is stronger too). Ray bends are also pretty cool looking and they make it much harder to copy *ahem*. The Deuce is made of high strength 7075-T6 aluminum that meets AMS4045. All deuces are tumbled and fully de-burred for smooth, rounded edges. The colorful anodizing keeps it from alumi-smearing on your hand.
- More details: the handle end is slightly flared so you can use the DirtSaw as a pull-saw or a push-saw. Handle edge ripples add friction and surface area for greater hand comfort. Unlike many ultralight camp trowels, these are NOT micro-scoop trowels. The Deuce’s scoop size is comparatively large so you can move a lot of dirt quickly – it makes mockery of digging holes with tent stakes and trekking poles. All Deuces have lifetime warranties and can be recycled anywhere that accepts aluminum.

You will use it upside down, sideways, angled, and right-side up while prying, poking, sawing, scraping, cutting, clipping, slicing and scooping. We don't put bumpers on the handle or make them longer because it would interfere with many of these digging modes. We also flared the handle end so you can use the DirtSaw as a pull-saw or a push-saw.
DirtSaw #1 - .45 ounces - 6.6"x2.4" - for fanatics ONLY; #2 - .60oz - 6.8"x2.5" - the latest version of our most popular backcountry latrine-hole trowel. It's scoop big enough to moving dirt quickly and its low weight and high toughness is kind of astounding.
DirtSaw #3 - .97oz - 7.7"x2.6" – big and strong, a real beast that excels at prying out rocks and moving a lot of dirt quickly.
All Deuces are made of 7075-T6 aluminum that meets AMS4045 – the standard that assures you it's HIGH STRENGTH aluminum. The #1 is noticably flexible and springy; the #2 can be flexed but not much; the #3, being the thickest, is almost rigid.
We make these in the US and in Korea (by DAC, the world's premier tent pole maker). They are made in compliance with strict environmental protection laws and the material, workmanship, and lifetime guarantee ($4 replacement postage in US) are exactly the same regardless of where your Deuce is manufactured. We put "madeinUS" as part of the color name to easily identify our US made products.
