Headstock Machine Screw Set
for ShopSmith Mark V Machines
No Rust Grade 18-8 Stainless Steel
Both sheet metal stampings on the headstock are held in place by small machine screws. Because of vibration, these little pieces tend to fall out from time to time. We have seen them replaced by many kinds of non-matching fasteners. If your machine is looking shabby in this area, maybe it is time to spend a small amount of money and properly secured the pans to your ShopSmith Mark V headstock.
Our headstock machine screw attachment screw sets are made of stainless steel to eliminate rust. The bolt heads are the Truss style which is wider and more stable than the original pan head bolt heads. Also, the original machine screws were the self threading style. Since the threads are already cut, our screws are NOT that type. Ours are standard machine screws. The original star washers were OK for their day, but advancements have been made since then. Our washers are neoprene bonded to stainless steel. This combination keeps the bolts tight while decreasing noise and vibration. If you are a traditionalist, we have also included star washers for you. Actually you could use both types of washers at the same time. Note: the machine screw at the top of the headstock needs to be shorter or it will bottom out on the quill bearing. This kit contains that shorter machine screw.
In addition to the machine screws and washers that hold the pans in place, this kit contains two other fasteners. These small pieces are for attaching the fan plate to the housing. The original nuts were the stamped steel type that often came loose and got lost. Our two machine screws come with fender washers and lock nuts which should stay in place much longer. You will have to remove the housing to install these two little screws.
You can install most of this upgrade kit without taking apart your
headstock. Simply change one screw at a time.
All it takes in a Phillips head screwdriver.

18-8 stainless steel which will eliminate future rust.
