Oriental Botanicals Liver Tonic (Previously called Livaclean) includes milk thistle to support liver health and function, as well as the liver’s natural detoxification processes. It also contains schisandra, taken to maintain liver health in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Features and Benefits:

  • Milk thistle to support liver health and function, including the liver’s natural detoxification processes
  • Milk thistle is also traditionally used as a liver tonic, to maintain gallbladder function, and promote bile flow to aid in the digestion of dietary fats in Western herbal medicine
  • Schisandra, traditionally taken to maintain liver health in Chinese medicine
  • Citrus peel, traditionally used to reduce symptoms of indigestion, abdominal bloating and excessive burping in TCM
  • Plus goji berry, baical skullcap, bupleurum and Asian dandelion

How it works:

Oriental Botanicals Liver Tonic contains milk thistle to support the health and natural detoxification mechanisms of the liver, combined with traditional Chinese liver herbs.

Milk thistle supports healthy liver function

Milk thistle maintains healthy liver function, including supporting the liver’s natural detoxification mechanisms. It has antioxidant properties to help reduce free radical formation in the body (a natural by-product of our detoxification processes) for additional support of liver health.

In Western herbal medicine, milk thistle is traditionally taken to as a liver tonic and to protect the liver. It’s also traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to relieve indigestion, and to support healthy gallbladder function by aiding the healthy flow of bile from the gallbladder, which assists in the digestion of fats in the diet.

Schisandra and goji berry

Schisandra is an herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine to support the health of the liver. Goji berries are traditionally known in TCM for strengthening the liver (in a pattern called liver yin deficiency).

Bupleurum, citrus peel and baical skullcap

In TCM, a form of life force energy called qi (pronounced ‘chee’) is believed to flow around the body, providing the capacity for many of our physical functions. From the perspective of TCM, one of the liver’s main responsibilities is to ensure that the flow of qi is smooth and regular.

If the qi becomes stagnant or congested rather than smooth and free flowing (as may occur from eating a fatty diet), an excess of heat may build up in the body, indigestion symptoms may occur, and the liver’s ability to perform its natural detoxification functions may be compromised.

According to TCM, a stagnant liver may also lead to symptoms like irritability and irregular periods.

In TCM, the herbs bupleurum and citrus peel (also known as chen pi) are traditionally used regulate the flow of qi and activate its movement when liver stagnation occurs. When liver stagnation is present (called liver qi stasis pattern), bupleurum is traditionally used in TCM to relieve the irritability and irregular menstrual cycles that can occur, plus support healthy gallbladder function and bile flow.

Baical skullcap is also traditionally taken to support the liver’s natural detoxification mechanisms in TCM, when excess heat (called an internal heat pattern) is present in the body.

Based on its traditional use in TCM, citrus peel also supports bile secretion and flow, and relieves excessive burping, and indigestion symptoms like nausea, abdominal bloating and loss of appetite.
