Bettas, fry fish will start biting on the leaves, using them for cover or may even lay eggs on the leaves. You will notice your tank water changing color and do monitor the pH of your aquarium. Remove the leaves only when they start to disintegrate.

Catappa leaves come from the Terminalia Catappa tree, a large shade tree native to subtropical regions of Asia. This tree produces large leaves and edible fruit throughout the year. When the leaves fall and dry, we can collect them for use in our aquariums. Catappa trees are in many parts of the world, having been introduced to coastal ecosystems for human use. Today, Catappa trees can be found from India to West Africa to the tropical Americas. Catappa leaves are harvested by hand or often collected them from the ground! However, these dried leaves are thoroughly cleaned before being sold to consumers. The key benefit of Catappa leaves are tannins, making them the first choice for botanical method and Blackwater aquariums. Tannins can lower the pH of water; bettas prefer soft, low-pH water. Tannins can act as both a preventative management for many fish complaints. Preparation: 1) Rinse the Catappa leaves under tap water 2) Boil the leaves for 5 – 10 minutes in fresh water 3) Drain and strain the leaves 4) Soak the leaves in fresh water until water logged. You can use this water in the aquarium, along with the water leaves.
