Motherwort (scientific name: Leonurus japonicus Houttuyn) is a Lamiaceae, motherwort genus. An annual or biennial herb with a taproot densely populated with fibrous roots. Stems erect, usually 30-120 cm tall, obtuse quadrangular, slightly grooved, with inverted strigose. The leaf profile varies greatly, the leaf profile of the lower stem is ovate, the base is broadly wedge-shaped, palmately 3-lobed, and the lobes are oblong-rhombic to oval. Cymes axillary, with 8-15 flowers, spherical in outline, 2-2.5 cm in diameter, most of which form long spikes away from each other. Stamens 4, all extending below the upper lip, parallel, anterior pair longer, filaments filiform, flat. Nutlets oblong and triangular, 2.5 mm long, truncated and slightly broad at the top, wedge-shaped at the base, light brown, smooth. The flowering period is usually June-September, and the fruiting period is September-October.
