The MojoAxe VibroStop Reissue Locking Kit provides a solution to the tuning issues related to the Sideways Vibrola unit. This kit is compatible with both Gibson USA and Custom Shop Reissue SG models made since around 2010 which feature the Sideways Vibrola. It is not compatible with the original 1960-1963 design Sideways Vibrola, however I do have another locking kit available for that model.
The Gibson Sideways Vibrola has a beautiful art-deco design, however it does not function well at all as a vibrola. What it does do best is to prevent a guitar from staying in tune, which is a problem that the MojoAxe VibroStop Kit resolves. The VibroStop Kit locks the Vibrola unit down so that it is a solid as a stopbar tailpiece would be. Tuning problems associated with the Vibrola will go away, while the Vibrola unit stays in place on the guitar looking good and acting as a nice counterbalance for the SG which is normally neck-heavy by the nature of its design.
The VibroStop Kit includes two nickel-plated CNC machined brass clamp blocks and necessary fasteners. The clamp blocks replace the stock bearing block which is located in the center of the Vibrola unit. The clamp blocks are fastened to the body with two wood screws which are threaded into the existing holes. Installation instructions are included. It’s very simple to install and can be done in about 10-15 minutes. The VibroStop Kit was designed with several goals in mind:
- Lock the Vibrola unit, preventing it from moving front-to-back, top-to-bottom, and side-to-side, thus stabilizing the tuning.
- Pull the Vibrola unit downwards which increases the break angle of the strings behind the bridge. This helps to stabilize the tuning and it increases sustain.
- Make the modification completely reversible so that the Vibrola function can be restored if desired.
