- La espirulina es un alga unicelular azul verdosa famosa por ser una fuente importante de proteínas, vitaminas y minerales, por lo que destaca por su alto valor nutritivo. Además, tiene un efecto saciante.
Generalmente se utiliza de forma desecada, en polvo o en forma de tabletas, aunque también se puede obtener en fresco. Es muy utilizada como complemento dietético y nutricional, especialmente por parte de deportistas y de personas interesadas en bajar de peso .
Con frecuencia se habla de ella como superalimento, pero los especialistas en nutrición y dietética desaconsejan el uso de este término, ya que una dieta saludable no se basa en alimentos concretos, sino en la combinación adecuada de productos con distintos nutrientes.
Propiedades de la espirulina
Esta micro alga da al organismo un aporte importante de vitaminas y minerales, aunque también puede tener efectos adversos. Según el Grupo de complementos de la Vocalía de Alimentación del COF de Barcelona, la espirulina destaca por las siguientes propiedades:
Proteínas: tiene una proporción de proteínas superior a la de otras fuentes, proporcionando un 65 por ciento de éstas al organismo.
Fácil digestión: la espirulina carece de celulosa, lo que hace que sea más fácil de digerir, incluso para las personas con mala absorción intestinal.
Lípidos: los ácidos grasos esenciales ocupan una importante proporción en la composición de la espirulina..
Minerales: la espirulina tiene una cantidad relevante de potasio, magnesio, calcio, zinc, manganeso, selenio, hierro y fósforo.
Vitaminas: la espirulina contiene una alta cantidad de vitaminas diversas como por ejemplo la vitamina E y otros elementos que destacan por sus propiedades antioxidantes, betacaroteno y todas las vitaminas del grupo B. Sin embargo, la vitamina B12 que aporta no es biodisponible para humanos, por lo que no sirve para sustituir la suplementación que requieren los veganos y vegetarianos.
Pigmentos: posee pigmentos en altas cantidades que podrían tener efectos antioxidantes y antiinflamatorios.

- Propiedades nutricionales de la Chlorella
La chlorella es rica en betacaroteno. 5 g satisfacen la mitad de las necesidades diarias de provitamina A, esencial para el buen estado de la piel, los ojos y las mucosas. El betacaroteno es además un potente antioxidante.
La dosis mencionada aporta respectivamente el 35 y el 24% de las necesidades diarias de hierro y zinc. También contiene magnesio y fósforo en proporciones menores.
Rica en proteínas: el extracto seco de chlorella es proteína en un 58%, grasa poliinsaturada en un 9%, hidratos de carbono en un 23% y fibra en un 1%.
Sin embargo, como se consume en pequeñas cantidades, su aporte de macronutrientes y energía no es muy significativo.
Una dosis de 5 g cubre el 5% de las necesidades diarias de proteínas.
- Alga Kelp
La excelente reputación del kelp es sin duda merecida. Además de ser un aporte proteico vegetal excelente y muy rico en vitaminas, es una fuente natural de minerales como el yodo, potasio, magnesio, calcio y hierro. El yodo es utilizado por personas que sufren hipotiroidismo. Se sabe que las hormonas tiroideas son importantes para mantener el metabolismo celular sano.
Aquellos que quieren adelgazar de manera natural también deben añadir esta alga a su lista de la compra. Además de ser baja en grasas y calorías, tiene el poder natural de ralentizar la absorción de grasas en el intestino.
- Alga Fucus
A pesar de que las algas han marcado tendencia en el mundo de la gastronomía, son muchas las personas que todavía se muestran reacias a su consumo.
