Located about one mile from the small village of Spean Bridge in the Lochaber region of the Western Highlands, the Commando Memorial was unveiled by the Queen Mother in 1952, seven years after the end of the Second World War.
With its three warriors cast in bronze and gazing towards the grandeur of Ben Nevis, it pays tribute to those 25,000 men of a number of nationalities who underwent a gruelling six-week training course in the rugged terrain of the surrounding area after volunteering for ‘duties of a hazardous nature.’
Early in the war Prime Minister Winston Churchill had instructed his military commanders to draw up proposals for an elite force to carry out assaults on Hitler’s Festung Europa – Fortress Europe, stating: “They must be prepared with specially trained troops of the hunter class who can develop a reign of terror on the enemy coast.”
The chilling remit of such a force was to “butcher and bolt.”
Thus were born the Commandos, who went on to play a vital role in securing Allied victory, accruing no fewer than 479 decorations, including eight Victoria Crosses – the highest award for gallantry in the face of enemy action for British and Commonwealth forces.
As fitting tribute, the Commando Memorial’s three warriors are arranged in a V-Shaped ‘cutting edge’ formation, while inscribed on the plinth is the motto United We Conquer, and a plaque that reads: “In memory of the officers and men of the commandos who died in the Second World War 1939-1945. This country was their training ground.”

Tracking & Notifications
Every order is fully trackable. You will receive a tracking number via email once your order ships. If your order ships in multiple packages, each package will have its own tracking number.
