HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sd.Kfz. 138/2 Jagdpanzer 38 "Flammhetzer" was a specialized variant of the iconic Hetzer tank destroyer, developed by Nazi Germany in the final stages of World War II. Unlike the regular Hetzer, which was equipped with a 75mm anti-tank gun, the Flammhetzer was fitted with a flamethrower designed to target enemy infantry, fortifications, and other soft targets. This vehicle was part of the German Army’s attempt to counter the overwhelming numbers of Soviet and Allied forces by introducing innovative weaponry. The Flammhetzer was produced in limited numbers and was primarily used by the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division "Goetz von Berlichingen" during the chaotic fighting on the Western Front in 1945.
In the spring of 1945, the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division was engaged in desperate defensive operations as the Allies advanced toward Germany. The "Flammhetzer" played a key role in these battles, particularly in the dense forested regions where its flamethrower could be used to flush out entrenched enemy troops. The division saw action in places such as the area around the Ruhr and along the western banks of the Rhine, where the Allies launched their final offensives. The "Flammhetzer" was particularly effective against infantry, making it a valuable asset for clearing out trenches, bunkers, and other fortifications. However, by the time these units were deployed, the German forces were in full retreat, and they faced overwhelming enemy forces.
Despite its fearsome appearance and deadly flamethrower, the "Flammhetzer" had limited success due to the dire strategic situation and the overwhelming Allied firepower. As the Western Front collapsed, the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division found itself surrounded and outnumbered. The "Flammhetzer" saw its last action during the desperate fighting in the Ruhr pocket and around the final defense lines near the Rhine, where it was used in rear-guard actions. While it was a fearsome weapon on the battlefield, the Flammhetzer's deployment was short-lived, as the division was eventually forced to surrender to the advancing Allied forces. The vehicle became emblematic of the final, futile attempts by the German military to slow the inexorable Allied advance into Germany.
This 1:72 scale model is a stunning tribute to this unique and fearsome tank destroyer. The model faithfully captures the vehicle’s distinctive design, including the flamethrower mount, rugged armored body, and period-accurate camouflage. It is an excellent piece for collectors of World War II military models, offering a detailed representation of one of the last innovative weapons employed by the German Army in their final stand against the Allies. Whether you are a historian or a model enthusiast, this Flammhetzer will make a striking addition to any collection.
